back in 90s san francisco scott, gavin and robbie hardkiss helped pioneer the american underground scene with their club nights, warehouse parties and groundbreaking record label. they forged a new direction for dance music with a string of vinyl releases by hawke, god within, little wing and rabbit in the moon, culminating in the seminal compilation delusions of grandeur released in 1995. delusions of grandeur made the billboard dance charts, went to no.1 on the rolling stone alternative album chart and launched the international dj/production careers of the hardkiss brothers. in 2018 to celebrate the 20th anniversary, the album was remastered and re-released with this new vinyl.

for the past two years, flee has been working on its first issue entitled benga music – a signature genre from kenya. conceived as an attempt to document a kenyan timeless music genre – benga – this issue is also a visual and audial tribute to the heritage of east african music. approaching this musical genre with a new and innovative perspective, the first release of flee features a vinyl compilation and a printed journal. faithful to the local essence of the genre while transcending unproductive nostalgia, the two objects ensure that the vibrant traditional roots of the benga movement interact with a contemporary approach. to make this initiative possible, we joined forces with celebrated kenyan journalists, ondiso madete and emmanuel mwendwa, and collaborated with renowned international specialists such as douglas paterson. this great team work translated into a well-documented manuscript, with exciting articles, exclusive authentic photos of the era and creative present-day illustrations celebrating the genre. accompanying the journal, the record tells a surprising story, starting with the pioneers of benga (daniel owino misiani, george ramogi and the migori superstars) and concluding with the modern respectful re-interpretations of nik weston, jaakko eino kalevi, and africaine 808, blowing the dust of the original scores.

dirty funk house from colombia! with heavy remixes by seb wildblood (church), retrogott (ava, money sex) & dj qualle and pontchartrain. felipe gordon is new to the scene, but entering the house world now via toy tonics in a heavy way. just watch that remix package: felipe gordon has some massive fans already. he knows a few dudes and he has some cool releases coming on church, s3a records and intimate friends. in fact felipe is throwing some of the biggest underground house parties in colombia along with his nómada records crew from bogotá. and he is making tracks, too. dirty bangers. with a certain unique vibe. he used to play in bands before switching to samplers and getting addicted to old disco and house vinyl. you can hear that: his moody, raw tunes use samples of rare records. but selected carefully, adding his own juno 60 or moog synth chords (like on tell me something true). often using minor keys and lot of little noises and short spoken words by himself. never clean, always musically special. felipe gordon might be new to the international dance scene, but for sure you gonna hear that name more frequently over the next years.

for alan oldham, artistic expression is a way of life, taking multiple forms and medi-ums throughout his lifetime. before he was ever known as dj t-1000, he was a published car-toon artist and radio dj in detroit writing press releases for underground resistance to get by. one day, underground resistance was in need of a last minute dj for their tour in aus-tralia, and a door flew open for alan oldham. with passport in hand he departed on his jour-ney as a dj, which little did he know would eventually span continents. influenced by every-thing around him, his work has dynamically changed and evolved along with his life. currently as an international dj living in berlin, his latest creation is the acidspace ep, released by elypsia records under the detroitrocketscience name. the traveler himself takes us on an intergalactic adventure, beginning with acidspace (8:48). with a steady beat and a unique blend of serene space sounds, this jam excites the imagination for the journey to come. it is followed by rocket to berlin (7:20), a subtle and intricate mix that entices one to enter the unknown. vesta system (6:22) finishes the ep off on a note that leaves lis-teners grooving and enjoying the ride. creativity and sweet sounds are what its all about for alan oldham. with his recent musical shift to mellower, sci-fi inspired jams, he continues to let listeners see for themselves.

the sixth instalment of slow motion s retro-futuristic international-sister label is the debut release of mysterious russian producer fakundo. this record sits at the heavier end of our musical spectrum and is brimming with hard-hitting electro swagger that conjures up a dystopian video-game underworld, the best bits of alien sex fiend and comes atop a whole bunch of wobbly baselines. not for the faint of heart this record is a total dance-floor destroyer.

we are living in precarious times. a senile, racist old man prone to temper tantrums has his tiny hands on the controls of the most powerful military machine the world has ever known. a handful of his (no less dangerous) international business associates and personal friends possess more collective wealth than the rest of us put together. the oceans and forests of the planet are dying slow deaths by asphyxiation, force fed 300 million tons of single use plastic garbage every year, and the temperature, both literal and rhetorical, rises the world over with each passing day.

after more than 30 years, halfway ritmo in collaboration with early sounds, will release unpublished recordings (1982-1989) from former tangerine dream and iggy pop s drummer klaus krüger. advanced dance combines a sweeping mix of krüger s handcrafted acoustic drums and distinctive electronic sounds of the late berlin- school years, creating a unique blend of advanced polyrhythms. krüger achieved a balance between creativity and classic drum patterns giving birth to an unconventional and avant-garde type of music that could be easily defined as a precursor of techno. his progressive mentality led him to delve further into the tape collage technique and unique ways of triggering his drums. it was a whole new world of music - sustained by his artistic surroundings, which included collaborations as well as friendships with other influential artists such as david bowie, martin kippenberger and helmut newton. in the time of german division, the pulsating west berlin became a melting pot of creativity and international encounters. advanced dance is the result of the blazing heat feeding the unstoppable thirst of discovery which characterized that generation, creating tunes that transform the listener s experience into one blissful moment amidst beautiful confusion.

from the boom of the international neo-lounge revival italy has become the point of attraction of an almost maniacal interest. there is a lot of research work from different italian labels behind it. thanks to them even the latest generations have the chance to meet the made in italy sound of the soundtracks and library music and even more notoriety has been given to the genial arrangers, composers and musicians who have characterised the italian lounge scene of 60’s/70’s, such as ennio morricone and piero piccioni. a precious recovery of the past to revitalise the present, which builds up new ideas of the future. “metti una bossa a cena”, whose title is completely inspired by the famous soundtrack of ennio morricone, goes on into this research field, discovering very rare tracks of this italian bossa panorama. we believe the result is perfect. gerardo frisina, track compiler of this project, has brought to light some rare tracks and perfectly matched them to create an unique and elegant thread.

violet and bleid met last year in lisbon, at the radio quântica studios. in the very same day, they impromptu started working together on a track: a cover of underground sound of lisbon’s so get up to celebrate international womens day. together, alongside a crew of young lisbon djs and activists, they also run the queer techno party mina, one of the most vital things going on in the city’s nightlife - the picture in the artwork was taken in the backstage of one of those infamous, dark-room-equipped parties.
bleid remixed naive001’s togetherness by violet, and that dope rework made it to rroxymore’s bag (as heard at berghain) and was played on bbc radio 6, rinse fm and +++. the pair became friends, started bouncing ideas about production techniques, rap skills and the importance (or lack thereof) of the classics in dance music. making more music together happened naturally.
naive002 feels like a continuation of naive’s first release in some ways: the jungle-inspired chopped breaks, sonic synth work and oneiric pads are still there but gain a heavier, perhaps more somber tone at times, exploding into depth or ecstasy at others.

after his appearance on born free records, rollerboys recordings, and rett i fletta, johannes wilkstrom aka yourhighness contributes to cocktail d amore music with stratofortress. the berlin based imprint gathered techno guru rrose, born free records owner samo dj, and international japanese wave representative gonno, to offer an ep with a wide range of interpretations of the title track. the original mix is an acid based, industrial influenced techno banger. highly energetic, for sweaty late-night dance floors. on the same side samo dj transforms the techno blaster into a funky ebm ballad, characterized by a deep male voice and a breakbeat groove. rrose is on remix duty on the b-side. stratofortress suddenly turns into a dubby, everlasting build up, that eventually implodes in the depth of a black hole. closing the ep gonno offers a slow-mo rework. deep and very cinematic, this remix will please every cosmic hole connaisseur.

following a red letter release in the form of joe armon-jones & maxwell owin s idiom, yam recordings return with the second installment of their you and music compilation series, this time compiled by yam fam hollick & z lovecraft. kicking things off on the a side is native cruise, a new artist hollick has been working extensively with on no bad days, bringing that signature ‘floaty yet punchy’ sound. it’s a kwaito-esque club jam with pan flutes and percussive loops bringing that energy to the start of the record. will listers sunset over st. petets spire is up next with a hypnotising yet intricate production from the hugely promising talent. will is a dude very much affiliated with yam and, of course, our pals over at balamii radio so it only seemed natural to have him on the record. that melody is a proper ear-worm too! the b side, curated by z lovecraft, is a slightly tougher affair with three tracks representing his taste in soulful sounds and expands on his a&r work for rhythm section international. first up is rouge me&#769,,chaniques prisma ltd a 7-minute psychedelic drum odyssey showcasing the multi instrumentalists many talents and influences, with guitar overdubs and flute ambience taking the dance floor far and beyond. on b2, upcoming break beat talent, lt, takes the helm with gale force. hailing from the peak district, lt makes work of deep vocal pads, 606 touches and a killer bass line. finishing off the compilation is wholemeal musics boy wonder, dear earth, who conjures a charming hip-hop ditty with his delicate assemblage style.

last years on the corner underground smash release, the 12inch ep santuris embaire umeme, introduced uganda’s mugwisa international xylophone group (m.i.x.g) to the world. the recordings center on the embaire, a giant xylophone native to ugandan folk music, which is dug into a pit for a natural, earthy bass resonance as gargantuous as the instrument itself. the instrument performs a key role in village life, with ceremonial playing sessions lasting for hours on end. these recordings may be esoteric in nature but they add important context to the santuri’s embaire umeme 12inch and are a vital documentation of the iganga village’s culture, as well as that of uganda. jones has artfully chopped the epic session into a series of short evocative chapters to create a pioneering masterpiece. remix duties are led by griot house innovators, the diabolcal liberties, who have raved-up some sun ra frequencies for the cosmic junglist crew. last but never least, victoria topping has created beautiful artwork using the session photography taken by jones during the recordings
